Apply for GP specialty training
To work as an independent GP in the UK, you need to complete GP specialty training (GPST).
Training usually takes 3 years. This typically includes:
- at least 24 months in general practice, within an approved GP training practice
- the remaining time in approved hospital posts
- Integrated Training Posts (ITPs) may be undertaken in the first two years of GP specialty training, and are based in a general practice with additional curricular educational experience in another specialty
You may need additional training time depending on your circumstances. This is in line with other medical specialties and reflects the demands of general practice.
GP recruitment is coordinated by the General Practice National Recruitment Office (GPNRO) and covers all four nations of the UK: England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.
